Examining Myself and Others: Victor Arruda and Carroll Dunham

The artists are linked through their explorations of masculinity, conflict, sex, and consciousness through bent and gendered figures that exist in and against impossible environments, and vibrant colorways.

Heitor dos Prazeres

Art Basel 2024

For the Feature section of Art Basel 2024, Almeida & Dale presents a selection of works by Heitor dos Prazeres, including oil paintings on canvas, wood and cardboard, made mainly in the 1950s and 1960s. The group of works highlights the artist's unique and vibrant style, characterized by the expressiveness of the colors and the representation of themes related to Black Brazilian culture: scenes of urban and rural daily life, popular festivals and street games, portraying characters such as samba musicians and dancers, bohemians, candomblecistas and workers – themes with unavoidable political implications, since the multi-artist's production reflects on the post-slavery reality and the forms of resistance and preservation of Afro-Brazilian culture.

Lygia Pape: ação-dentro

The exhibition "Lygia Pape: ação-dentro" [Lygia Pape: Action-inside], curated by Ana Avelar and by the assistant curator Laura Rago, presented and realized by Almeida & Dale, seeks to bring new perspectives on the production of Lygia Pape, an artist who marked 20th century Brazilian art and whose work reverberates in contemporary production.  Contributing to an overview of Lygia Pape's methodologies, the exhibition, with around 50 works, including installations, papers and three-dimensional works produced between the 1950s and 2000s, proposes an immersion in the artist's experimental universe and establishes a line of research that sheds new light on Lygia Pape's body of work.

Hélio Melo

Born and raised in a rubber plantation, Hélio Melo (1926–2001) was a rubber tapper, boatman, barber, watchman, writer, poet, musician and artist. From the late 1970s onwards, after having moved to Rio Branco (capital of Acre, State in the Amazonian region) and, therefore, starting to paint the forest from memory, he participated in his first exhibitions, drawing the attention of important artists and critics.

Rodrigo Andrade was part of the Casa 7 group, which stood out for renewing painting in the 1980s. Sidney Amaral: one mirror over history

The exhibition recovers the importance of John Graz's performance for the consolidation of modern furniture design in Brazil, this selection highlights the diversity and eclecticism of the Swiss artist who chose this country as his home.
Elegant and innovative, John Graz's furniture reveals both his approach to Bauhaus principles in its concern for structure and functionality, as well as a clear influence of Art Deco in the delicacy of lines and shapes. His work was a precursor of modern furniture design in the Brazilian scene, introducing crucial issues such as serial production and research for alternative materials.

Agnaldo Manuel dos Santos – The Conquest of Modernity

The largest exhibition dedicated to the work of the black artist, who died at age 35, brings together around 60 wooden sculptures, produced between 1953 and 1962. The curator's research on Agnaldo's work was based on testimonies and documents to present an artist to the public which subverted the modernity granted to him, by not accepting to explore only the themes that they tried to impose on him.

Sacilotto - The Vibration of Color

A painter and engraver born in 1937 in Goiás, Miriam was a student of Ivan Serpa at MAM-RJ and participated in two International Biennials of São Paulo (1963 and 1967). Almeida & Dale Art Gallery, brings the work of the artist still unknown to the public.

Candido Portinari: Iara Ballet

Discover the history of the Ballet Iara through the drawings and paintings by Candido Portinari created for the costumes and scenarios.The idea of Balé Iara arose in 1941, during a meeting between the poet Guilherme de Almeida and Wassily de Basil, director of the Original Ballet Russe, who, enchanted with Brazilian culture, sought to integrate the richest Brazilian elements into the innovative ballet. Maestro Francisco Mignone was the composer responsible for the musical part of the Ballet Iara.

Burle Marx: Recreated Paradises

Roberto Burle Marx was one of the most important landscapers of the 20th century. He incorporated a plastic aesthetic into the creation of landscapes and tirelessly experimented with and searched for new solutions for his art. Landscaping carried the logic of plastic arts, in unique aesthetic perception, through the use of shapes, textures, color, volume, and shadows, transforming public and private spaces. A multifaceted and restless artist, he was a landscaper, a painter, a sculptor, a jewelry designer, a ceramist, an ecologist, and a musician. He created fabrics, jewelry, costumes, sets, sculptures, prints, and gardens with his avant-garde and modern artistic style.

Flávio de Carvalho

Flávio de Carvalho was a prominent personality in São Paulo's culture, working in architecture, visual arts and theater. His extensive and multiple productions includes the activities of painter, draftsman, architect, scenographer, decorator, writer, playwright, playwright and engineer.

Farnese de Andrade

After sometime working initially with engraving, by the mid-1960s Farnese de Andrade began to produce assemblages with objects such as doll heads and bodies, plaster and plastic saints, all corroded by the sea, collected in rivers, beaches and landfills. These works incorporate glass domes, cabinets, oratories, niches, boxes and religious images, and postcards.
