“Vai, vai, saudade” presents the multitude of Brazilian art in Italy
07/03/2024
The exhibition “Vai, vai, saudade”, curated by Cristiano Raimondi, opens July 4th at the Madre - museo d’arte contemporanea Donnaregina, in Napoli, Italy. Presenting the productions of Brazilian artists, some of the shows' highlights are In-mensa (1982), by Cildo Meireles, Via Sacra da Amazônia (1990), by Hélio Melo, the Livro da Arquitetura nº II [Book of Arquitecture] (1959/1960, by Lygia Pape, as well as several works by Miriam Inez da Silva and Sidney Amaral, and a room dedicated to Heitor dos Prazeres.
The rooms composing the exhibit are “travel notes” that merge together to form a free but interconnected exhibition itinerary of formal and conceptual, spiritual and earthly, political and geographical themes that together form the basis of a narrative that follows a novel-like logic.
In curator Raimondi's perception, Brazil is “A country that has proved itself able to build an identity based on the valorization of multiculturalism and the fusion of multiple languages, defying the Eurocentric and monolithic approach to art history.”
Hélio Melo's series Via Sacra da Amazônia [Amazon Stations of the Cross] (1990) was part of the artist's solo exhibition at Almeida & Dale in 2023, curated by Jacopo Crivelli Visconti. Click here to access the catalog.
