Exhibition in Switzerland Offers a Look at Brazilian Artistic Production
09/06/2024
The exhibition "Brasil! Brasil!," opening today at the Zentrum Paul Klee in Bern, Switzerland, explores the pursuit of a modern artistic expression in Brazil during the first half of the 20th century. This period saw local artists, influenced by the European avant-gardes, also drawing inspiration from Indigenous and Afro-Brazilian cultures.
The exhibition highlights the work of ten key artists who were instrumental in shaping Brazilian cultural identity, including Tarsila do Amaral, Anita Malfatti, Alfredo Volpi, Candido Portinari, and Rubem Valentim.
Curated by Fabienne Eggelhöfer from the Zentrum Paul Klee and Roberta Saraiva Coutinho from São Paulo, the exhibition draws parallels with significant political and economic events, while also highlighting milestones in Brazilian literature, music, design, and architecture.
"Brasil! Brasil!" is organized by the Zentrum Paul Klee in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts in London, where it will be on view from January 28 to April 21, 2025.
