Exhibition Featuring Works by Eleonore Koch Opens Today at MAC USP

Opening today, April 6th at 11 AM, the exhibition "Eleonore Koch: Em Cena" [Eleonore Koch: In Scene] at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea USP (MAC USP) brings together 190 works from public and private collections. The exhibition offers a comprehensive view of Koch's production, exploring her unique approach to painting and her reflection on the nature of the image, providing a unique insight into the artist's output. Curated by Fernanda Pitta, the exhibition also features photographs, postcards, and studies from the artist's archive, recently donated to MAC USP. These documents showcase Koch's creative process and her inquiries into the nature of the image, perspective, and framing.

Eleonore Koch (1926-2018), also known as Lore Koch, was a Jewish German painter who took refuge in Brazil with her family at the age of twelve. Her paintings evoke the memory of everyday objects while exploring the sensory nature of painting through the tension between planes of color and line. The artist addressed traditional genres of painting—such as landscapes, interiors, and still lifes—and an ancient technique, egg tempera, to represent contemporary issues and her own life experiences. "Her painting alludes to exile, deterritorialization, a sense of being in the world, aware of privileges and the consequences of one's choices," comments Fernanda Pitta, the exhibition curator. The metaphor in the exhibition title refers to cinema. Many of the works appear as settings for events that have just occurred or are about to take place. The almost total absence of the human figure is contradicted by the repeated presence of objects imbued with affection, which the artist kept with her for much of her life, silent characters in a quiet narrative.
