Lygia Pape: Ação-Dentro
Curated by Ana Avelar
Until June 29th, 2024
Curated by Ana Avelar, the next exhibition at Almeida & Dale focuses on a relevant part of Lygia Pape's production, proposing three axes based on the observation of the artist's work and ideas: body, construction and senses.
The solo show will feature works in a variety of media, produced between the 1950s and 2000s, including three-dimensional works, installations and an important series of woodcuts, the Tecelares, as well as previously unseen works. The thoughts of Susanne Langer and Mario Pedrosa, authors cited by the artist in her writings, are among the references for the curatorial discourse. According to Ana Avelar, it is a question of observing the role of both in the "sensitive and at the same time constructive art" developed by Pape, and their thinking that informs artistic procedures. In this sense, an important aspect for understanding Lygia Pape's visual production, present in the narrative proposed by the exhibition, is her work as an Art Theorist and Teacher.
The exhibition also presents Pape's experimental artistic practice, known as the central figure of Neo-Concretism, while at the same time raising hypothesiis and proposing new perspectives on the artist's production. By addressing multiple layers of her work, the exhibition manifests the connection between forms, techniques, sensory experiences and chromatic or spatial exploration. The opening takes place on 23 March at Almeida & Dale.
