Mario N. Ishikawa, an exponent of Brazilian conceptual art, shows historical and contemporary works at the Almeida & Dale stand at ArPa 2024

A pioneer in experimenting with “alternative media” in Brazil, Mario N. Ishikawa has worked extensively with xerox art, mail art and offset since the 1970s.

Most of his works exhibited at ArPa were produced during the 20th Bienal de São Paulo (1989), when he takes part in the 1st International Electrography Studio, which included artists such as Artur Mattuck, Paulo Bruscky and Vera Chaves Barcellos, among others.

For around a month, he dedicated himself to investigating the medium and its expressive resources as a subject, moving away from the use of xerography. In the Bienal's studio, he had access to a set of equipment which allowed him, for the first time, to make color reproductions, albeit in monochrome, and enlargements of images in A3 format. In his experiments, Ishikawa then rearticulated a repertoire of social and political themes that had mobilized his attention since the days of graphic design and the new figuration, as well as an iconography of fragmented gestures and bodies, with their profuse figurations of hands, eyes and mouths.
