Itinerant Exhibition in Modernist Houses in São Paulo

08/06/2024

Almeida & Dale is part of the third edition of ABERTO – a platform for itinerant exhibitions held outside the traditional museum and gallery circuit – which aims to unite art, design, and architecture in an ode to the legacy of great artists and architects. Starting in 2022, the project has already presented two editions in houses designed by architects Oscar Niemeyer and Villanova Artigas.

For this edition, which begins on August 11, ABERTO3 occupies two modernist houses from the 1970s in São Paulo: the house-studio of Tomie Ohtake and the family residence project of Chu Ming Silveira.

The house where Tomie Ohtake lived and worked, located in the Campo Belo neighborhood, is one of the first major projects by her son, architect Ruy Ohtake. The family residence project of Chu Ming Silveira, an architect and designer born in Shanghai, China, is located in the Real Parque neighborhood. Chu Ming Silveira is the creator of an iconic symbol of Brazilian urban furniture, the "orelhão" (public phone booth).

Never before opened to the public, both houses host ABERTO3 with exhibitions of art and design. Among the nearly twenty artists presenting their works at the Tomie Ohtake house-studio are Adriana Varejão, Arlene Shechet, Beatriz Milhazes, Solange Pessoa, and Torkwase Dyson. Additionally, Paulo Miyada, curator of the Tomie Ohtake Institute, presents an exhibition on Tomie's life and work, featuring personal objects, archival materials, and artworks.

The house of Chu Ming Silveira hosts a selection of works by Amilcar de Castro, Anish Kapoor, Carmen Herrera, Eleonore Koch, Lucio Fontana, Lygia Clark, Lygia Pape, Maria Leontina, Sergio Camargo and Tunga.

The exhibitions also feature new furniture pieces designed by the Ohtake and Ming families, edited by ETEL. ABERTO3 was curated by Filipe Assis, Kiki Mazzucchelli and Claudia Moreira Salles.
